Red Line train car ‘with diminished braking capacity’ rolls past station

The MBTA is investigating after a set of subway cars rolled out of a rail yard, onto the Red Line and hundreds of feet past a subway station. “Shortly after 5:30 morning, a two-car train set with a train operator on board rolled out of the rail yard and onto the Red Line at Braintree Station,” a spokesperson for the transit agency said. The spokesperson said the incident happened as MBTA personnel were readying Red Line trains for the start of service. “The two-car train set had diminished braking capacity and it came to a stop approximately 800 feet north of Braintree Station,” the spokesperson said. “There were no injuries nor damage, but service was disrupted as T personnel worked to return the disabled, two-car set to the rail yard.”The MBTA said it has notified the Federal Transit Administration and the Department of Public Utilities of the incident and a full investigation is underway. “Investigators will work to determine whether the rules and procedures for moving trains were properly followed,” the spokesperson said. It’s the latest safety incident in the same stretch of tracks involving Red Line subway cars. On May 30, a Red Line subway train became detached and rolled backward through Braintree Station. The incident occurred when two workers tried to uncouple the last two cars from a Red Line train because of an air conditioning problem. The train eventually came to a stop on its own. A Red Line supervisor was on administrative suspension while the investigation into that incident was ongoing, the transit agency said last month. “In accordance with the FTA special directives, the MBTA is taking corrective actions to enhance safety around the movement of rail cars in yards,” the spokesperson said following Monday’s incident. “Accompanied with plans to increase staffing at rail yards, the MBTA recently issued a series of new safety directives, trainings, and polices regarding train movements in rail yard facilities and car houses.”
