‘Is THAT the gym?! Holy s***’: Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney release the first trailer for their ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Disney documentary series, charting the ‘underdog’ story of 18 months owning the fifth-division team

  • Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham AFC back in 2021
  • The Hollywood pair started a documentary, following their progress as owners
  • ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ tracks the highs and lows in a thrilling non-league season
  • Reynolds shared a two-minute trailer on Thursday, writing: ‘No pressure’

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have given fans an exciting glimpse of their documentary series as owners of fifth division football team Wrexham by releasing its first trailer.

The Hollywood stars officially took 100 per cent control of the National League club from the Wrexham Supporters’ Trust back in February 2021, before making a £2million investment in the club as part of the deal.

They immediately embarked on documenting the start to their time as chairmen of the Welsh club and 18 months on they are preparing to release their ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ series on Disney+.

The trailer begins with a wide shot of Reynolds and McElhenney stood on the pitch at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground on what was their first visit to the area in October last year.

During that whistlestop tour they held a fans’ forum for supporters to quiz them on anything and everything and the documentary cameras picked up a question from one young fan who asked why they bought the team.

‘We had no direct connection, it was just a feeling,’ McElhenney said.

The pair are stunned when they see the gym for the first team at the Racecourse Ground

The docuseries, which is being produced by Boardwalk Pictures, splits its focus between the two stars and the local community.

Fans quickly get glimpses of the pair being given a tour of the stadium and facilities and they are seen to be stunned at what they were going to need to improve, particularly at the Racecourse ground.

‘Is that the gym?!’ a stunned McElhenney asked Reynolds, as the camera pans to a small area in the corner of a room.

‘Holy s***,’ Reynolds responded.

Asked at a fans’ forum why they bought the team, they simply said ‘it was a feeling’ to do it

McElhenney and Reynolds are highly ambitious and the docuseries will chart their ownership

‘Yeah, this needs a little work,’ McElhenney told CEO Fleur Robinson and special advisor to the board, Shaun Harvey.

The series, which is released in the UK on August 24, largely follows the team across the 2021-22 season, which saw them narrowly miss out on promotion and come up short in the FA Trophy final at Wembley, which saw David Beckham and actor Will Ferrell among the special guests in the chairmen’s hospitality that day.

The trailer is accompanied by the backing track of Elvis’ ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’, as Reynolds and McElhenney underline the ‘underdog’ story they are trying to tell of an area down on its luck.

The Hollywood pair spoke to media at the Racecourse Ground on a drizzly Thursday afternoon

At one stage in the season Wrexham found themselves trailing 5-2 to Dover Athletic with just over half hour left to play at the Racecourse Ground.

A brace from striker Ollie Palmer and a double from Jordan Davies in stoppage-time secured the three points in an 11-goal thriller, which finished 6-5.

‘I just lost 9 years off my life,’ Reynolds tweeted afterwards. ‘And I’m okay with that. Apologies to my family. Also, bury me in Wales.’

The pair’s journey began with a Zoom call in an attempt to convince 2,000 members of the WST to sell to them as they confirmed Sportsmail’s story from September over a documentary series.

‘Sports is storytelling and is so woven into the fabric of the sport,’ Reynolds explained. ‘The Wrexham community is incredibly dynamic and supportive.’

They will start the 2022-23 season at home against Eastleigh as they look to go one better and win promotion to the Football League for the first time in 15 years.
