New Hampshire receives limited supply of monkeypox vaccine, will prioritize who gets first shots
A limited allocation of the monkeypox vaccine has been sent to New Hampshire, health officials said Tuesday. New Hampshire has received 262 vials of the “JYNNEOS” vaccine, officials said, which will lead to 131 people getting vaccinated, as two doses are needed. Another 65 doses are scheduled to arrive next week.Given the limited supply, New Hampshire is prioritizing the vaccine for people who have had “exposure to individuals with confirmed orthopoxvirus/monkeypox virus infections and are considered high-risk.” The state will also prioritize certain high-risk health care and public health workers. There are 11 vaccination sites in Massachusetts, too, but only Granite Staters who work in the Bay State can get vaccinated there.Dr. Anthony Fauci said the U.S. could be doing a better job at containing the spread, but more vaccines should be available by the end of this month. “It would have been good to have had a lot more vaccines available early on. But right now, we have accelerated that extensively. We had about 130,000 doses at first, another 154,000, and by the end of July, there should be another 700,000 plus,” Fauci said.The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting more than 1,900 cases in the U.S., including three in New Hampshire. Massachusetts has 51 confirmed cases. Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the same group of viruses as smallpox. Transmission of monkeypox requires close interaction with a symptomatic person. Brief interactions do not appear to be high-risk, and transmission has usually involved close physical or intimate contact or health care examinations conducted not using appropriate protective equipment, DHHS said.Symptoms of monkeypox include fever, headache, exhaustion, muscle aches and cough followed by a skin rash.People with monkeypox are contagious until all skin lesions have scabbed over and fallen off a person’s skin, health officials said. The illness usually lasts for two to four weeks. Symptoms are usually mild, but in rare cases, a more severe illness can occur that might require hospitalization.Monkeypox has been present in humans since the 1970s.
